Annual herbs. Stem much-branched, up to 100 cm, with simple or
3-forked yellowish spines at the base of each leaf. Leaves alternate, 3-5-fid, dark green above and white- tomentose beneath. Capitula solitary, sessile in leaf axils, male flowers borne at the ends of branches. Fruiting involucre up to 15x9 mm (inc spines), arachnoid; spines hooked. Fl. August-October. Dry slopes, waste places.

A weedy species with almost world-wide distribution.
