Biennial herbs. Stem terete or winged by decurrent leaves, mostly
branched from base. Basal leaves spathulate- oblong, up to 35 x 15 cm; cauline decurrent or not, oblong-ovate. Sepals ovate-lanceolate. Petals united at the base, yellow, up to 30 mm. diameter. Fruit an elliptic or subglobose capsule. Seeds poisinous. Fl. May-October. Roadsides, fallow fields, steppe, coastal sands, s.l.
Es. part of Mediterranean area, westwards to Anatolia.
