Aquatic or semi-aquatic perennials, with creeping rhizomes. Stem erect, corm-like at base, up to 2 m. Leaves mostly basal, erect; lamina linear, up to 14 mm broad. Female spike up to 42 x 2.3 cm when ripe, cinnamon brown. Male spike 1,5 x as long as female. Fruit small, indehiscent or longitudinally dehiscent, with a membranous pericarp.
