Biennial or perennial herbs. Stem densely branched, with interrupted spiny-dentate wings. Leaves alternate, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, pinnatifid to deeply toothed, spiny. Capitula homogamous, ligulate, sessile axillary. Involucre overtopped by spiny involucrate leaves; phyllaries pluriseriate. Flowers yellow. Achenes dorsally compressed. Pappus of 2-4 bristles. Roots medicinal. Young stem and leaves edible. Fl. June-August. Waste laud roadsides, fallow fields, s.l.

Mainly Mediterranean area, S. Russia. Crimea.
