Mound-forming spiny shrubs. Stem much-branched up to 75 cm or more; shoots densely hairy when young branches interwoven, the lateral ones leafless and terminating in a spine. Leaves alternate, oblong, small, pinnate, with 9-15 ovate leaflets. Flowers greenish, in globose or oblong heads to 30 mm, female flowers with purple feathery styles, above the male in each cluster. Fruit fleshy, yellowish brown, 3-5 mm diameter. Roots medicinal. Fl. March. Rocky slopes, phrygana, s.l.

Es Mediterranean area, W. to Sardinia and Tunusia.
