Tufted evergreen shrubs. Stem erect, branched, up to 50 cm. Stem leaves small, scale-like, scarious. Cladodes alternate, leaf-like, ovate to lanceolate, spine-tipped. Flowers greenish-white, 3 mm, solitary or in pairs, borne on the upper surface of the cladodes; the male and female on separate plants. Fruit a large red berry. Roots and leaves are medicinal. Young shoots are used as vegetable. Potential ornamental. Fl. February-May. Carpinus woodland, rocky limestone slopes and scree, scrub.

Türkiye, Italy, Austria, Bosnia, Macedonia, Hungary eastwards to Crimea, Caucasia, Cyprus & W. Syria.
