Bold and handsome annual or perennial herbs. Stem erect, up to 5 m. Leaves alternate, peltate, palmately lobed; lobes lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate; lamina up to 50 x 50 cm. Inflorescence paniculate. Flowers greenish-yellow. Fruit schizocarpic, covered with accrescent spines. Seeds compressed-ovoid, carunculate. Seeds are used for production industrial oil; poisionous. Fl. April-May. Roadsides and waste places, s.l.

Widely cultivated throughout the warmer parts of the world and often becoming naturalized.
