Evergreen shrubs or a small trees. Stem up to 10 m. Leaves alternate,
broadly ovate to oblong- ovate, oblong- lanceolate, coriaceous, sharply serrate-spiny, undulate, up to 5 x 3 cm. Staminate flowers in long slender pendulous catkins. Pistillate flowers solitary 2 to several on a very short to fairy elongate peduncle. Fruit a hemispherical cupule. Potential ornamental. Fl. September. A dominant member of phrygana and macchie; in Pinus brutia forest, s.l.

Mediterranean area.
