Ovary inferior, fruit large, berry-like, with leathery exocarp; seed numerous, each surrounded by pulp. Fruit edible. Fl. May-June. Limestone slopes, scrub

S. W. & C. Asia. Widely cultivated for its fruit (Pomegranate; in Turkish 'Nar'); in Turkey naturalized and probably wild, especially in the North-East.
