Hirsute perennial herbs. Stem ascending or erect, up to 140 cm. Leaves alternate, trifoliolate, petiolate; leaflets linear to lanceolate. Flowers shortly stalked, in umbels or racemes, up to 30-flowered. Calyx campanulate. Petals free at base, withish, blue to violet, 15-20 mm. Legume ovate, 5-15 mm long, with a curved beak. Fl. May-August. Open ground and in woodland.
