Evergreen small shrubs or rarely almost herbaceous. Stem much-branched, up to 60 cm. Leaves opposite, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, up to 45 x 30 mm. Verticillasters reduced to 1 (2)-flowered, arranged in foliose terminal racemes. Calyx campanulate. Petals united, white, up to 23 mm. Fruit dry nutlets, shiny-black when ripe. Fl. March-May. Under Pinus, macchie, dry banks, cliffs, fixed dunes, raodsides, on volcanic and calcareous substrata, s.l.

Mediterranean area.
