Annual herbs. Stem erect, branched below, up to 40 cm. Leaves opposite, linear or linear-lanceolate, up to 40 x 3 mm. Spikes ovoid, dense, up to 2 cm. Bracts all similar. Sepals ovate-spathulate. Petals united; tube rugulose, glabrous. Fruit an ellipsoid capsule. Fl. March-June. Wet meadows, damp hillsides, fixed sand dunes. railway banks, fields, Sarcopoterium phrygana, s.l.

Mediterranean area, S. W. Asia eastward to Pakistan.
