Trees, up to 25 m, with a large, umbrella-shaped crown. Twigs glabrous, very rough, the young twigs yellowish, the older grey-brown and leaves 8-16 cm. Buds without resinous. Cones broadly rounded, 8-14x10 cm, brown, sessile, pendulous. Seeds unwinged or very short winged. Seeds edible. Sandy soil of Pamphylia near sea Ievel.

Throughout the Mediterranean area and in Portugal. Planted in many areas of Turkey.
