Annual herbs. Stems erect, up to 90 cm. Leaves usually pinnatifid or pinnatisect; terminal segments much longer than the lateral segments. Peduncles spreading-hispid, rarely adpressed-setose. Petals free, red to crimson, rarely white. Capsule glabrous, globose to subglobose, rounded at the base, about twice as long as broad. Leaves edible. Fl. March-August. Fields, waste places, etc.

Temperate Eurasia, N.W. Africa.
