Short bulbous perennial. Scapose, without an aerial stem, often carpeting. All of the leaves basal, trifoliate, long-stalked; leaflets broadly heart-shaped. Flowers free, funnel-shaped, born in broad umbel. Sepals 5 mm. Petal yellow, up to 25 mm. Fruit a capsule. Leaves edible. Fl. April-May. Damp places, olive groves, vineyards, etc.

A native of the Cape region of S. Africa, widely naturalised in Mediterranean area.
