Spiny annual herbs. Stem erect, sometimes branched above, stiff,
unwinged. Leaves alternate, basal and cauline leaves elliptic, lobed to pinnatifid, margins finely spiny-serrate; upper leaves coriaceous, pinnatisect. Capitula homogamous, discoid, sessile or shortly pedunculate, borne in raceme. Involucre ovoid; phyllaries pluriseriate. Corollas tubular, pink or purple. Achenes compressed-obovoid. Pappus plumose. Fl. April-June. Rocky limestone slopes, fallow fields, banks, roadsides.
