Biennial herbs. Stem stout, up to 150 cm. Leaves alternate, basal and lower cauline with long winged petiole, lyrate or pinnately divided, with oblong, ovate lobes; middle and upper cauline sessile, oblong to broadly ovate. Flowers solitary, up to 4 cm, nodding. Calyx and corolla 8-10-fid. Calyx lobes up to 10 mm. Style up to 40 mm. Fruit a capsule, dehiscing by 3 valves at base, almost enclosed by calyx appendages when mature. Young roots and stem edible. Potential ornamental. Fl. May-August.
Rock slopes, dry open stony places.
