Prickly shrubs. Stem strong, up to 3 m. Leaves opposite, ovate,
toothed, short-stalked. Flowers cylindrical, yellow or orange changing to red or all yellow or all red, sometimes mauvish, up to 5 mm, congested into tight, heads on long stalked. Fruit a small black berry. Fl. May-October.
Widely cultivated and occasionally naturalised in the region, especially in Spain and Sicily.
