Deciduous tree or large shrub up to 10 m. Leaves alternate, opposite or in threes, oblong to elliptical. Inflorescence borne in large terminal panicles. Petals free, 6, pink to deep red or purplish, up to 35 mm, with a long claw. Fruit a capsule. Fl. June-September. Planted in parks and gardens.
