Shrub or small tree, up to 8 m. Leaves opposite, 2-pinnate; leaflets oval to diamond-shapped, downly leaflets. Flowers blue, trumpet-shaped, up to 60 mm long, borne in large terminal panicles, often before the leaves have develop. Fruit oval, brown when ripe, up to 80 mm. long. Fl. July-September. Often grown as a pot plant, occasionally in parks and gardens.

Native of Tropical America.
