Stout spiny perennial herbs. Stem erect, branched, up to 100cm. Leaves alternate, rigid, pinnatifid; segments broadly triangular, strongly spiny-dentate; lower leaves up to 30 x 16 cm, those above decreasing in size. Capitula solitary, few-flowered, homogamous and discoid. Flowers yellow, tubular, 4-8. Fertile achene smooth, ovoid. Pappus coronate entire to fimbriate margin. Dried fruits are prepared as coffee for hot drinks. Fl. May-June. Rocky limestone & igneous slopes, steppe, nr: salt lakes, open woodland, fallow fields.
