Tufted glaucous, rigid perennial herbs. Stem stout, widely branched, up to 35 cm. Leaves alternate, suborbicular, leathery, bluish-green, 3-5-lobed, with an undulate spiny margin. Inflorescence in dense rounded heads, ovoid; bracts ovate, coarsely spiny. Sepals prominent, stiff. Petals free, powder blue. Fruit egg-shaped to globose, often scaly. Fl. June-August. Coastal sands.
