Biennial herbs. Stem erect, prickly on the angles. Leaves opposite,
connate at the base, deeply lobed to pinnatifid, margin bristly-spinose. Capitula ovoid to cylindrical, up to 6 x 4 cm. Involucral bracts lanceolate; receptacular bracts with long apical spine, exceeding flowers. Calyx cupiliform. Corolla 4-lobed; petals united at base, white or pale pink. Involucel 4-angled. Dried inflorescence are used as ornamental. Fl. July-September. Roadsides, bank, fields.
