Long rhizomatous perennials, with lanate roots. Stem erect and wiry, up to 80 cm. Leaves sub-basal, blades thick, recurved. Bracts longer than inflorescence. Inflorescence a dense, sessile, hemispherical to globose head. Spiklets with dense, spirally arranged flowers. Glumes brownish to purplish, broadly lanceolate to ovate. Fruit a 1-seeded nut. Fl. June-August. Sandy sea shores, dunes and slacks, s.l.

Canary Isl., Portugal, Mediterranean area.
