Small shrubs, up to 50 cm. Leaves opposite, ovate-elliptic, up to 4
cm long, with stellate hairs all of the surface, petioles free. Cymes 1-3-flowered,. lateral. sepals 5, cordate at base, outer 3 enclosing inner 2. Petals free, white, 2-4 cm diameter, long pedicelled. Style very short or absent. Fruit a loculicidal capsule, adpressed pubescent. Potential ornamental. Fl. March-May. Calcareous macchie and garique on coastal hills.

Throughout the Mediterranean and extending into N. Iran, the Caucasus, &W. Europe.
