Carpobrotus acinaciformis(RED HOTTENTOT FIG) (Makas otu) (Rote Mittagsblume) Aizoaceae Robust, low, perennial succulent herbs. Stems trailing and mat-forming, woody at base. Leaves opposite, fleshy, bluish-green and broadest in the middle. Petals free, large, solitary, up to 12 cm, bright purple or purple-magenta, with numerous petals. Stamens purple, numerous. Fruit fleshy and slightly fig-like. Ideal species as cover for rocky places and sand dunes. Fl. April-July. Rocks, cliffs, sandy places, often planted along coast. Native of South Africa, West Indies, Florida, South western North America, South America and Australia. |
