Straggling shrubs with pairs of spines at each leaf-base. Leaves alternate, rounded or very broadly ovate, entire, usually without mucro, often glabrous. Sepals purplish, 4. Petals free, showy, 4, white, occasionally flushed with pink, 50-70 mm; Stamens long, free, many. Fruit a berry-like, many-seeded capsule. Flower buds edible after to pickle. Fl. July. Sea cliffs.

Türkiye, W. Mediterranean (excluding Spain), the Balkans, and eastward to Kashmir.
