Spiny climber or shrub to 10 m, though often less. Leaves entire, opposite
or in whorls, dark green, ovate, blunt. Flowers tubular, on showy bracts, rather insignificant, whitish or yellowish, funnel-shaped, but surrounded by large leaf-like bract. Bracts purple, one to each flower. Fruit achene. Fl. February-October. Planted parks and gardens.

Native of Tropics.
