Robust rhizomatous, patch-forming perennials. Stems bamboo-like, simple or branched from nodes. Leaves rough and tough, grey-green, up to 60 x 6 cm. Inflorescence a large plumose panicle, much branched, up to 70 cm long. Spikelets 2-4-flowered; florest all hermaphrodite. Glumes equal, glabrous. Lemma lanceolate, up to 12 mm. Fruit an oblong caryopsis. Stem is used to make simple flageolet. Fl. September-October.
