Often woody, perennial herbs. Stem ascending to erect, branched, especially below, up to 70 cm. Leaves opposite below, usually alternate above, linear or linear-lanceolate, up to 5 x 1 cm. Inflorescence raceme. Flowers showy. Calyx deeply 5-lobed. Corolla gibbous at base, bilabiate above, pink, purple, with a yellow or occasionally with palate. Fruit a beaked capsule. Fl. May- June. Coastal cliffs and walls, s.l.
Cultivar is common grown as ornamentals.
