Annual herbs. Stem erect or decumbent, up to 50 cm. Leaves alternate, up to 5 x 2 cm, elongateobovate or spathulate, rounded or weakly emarginate at the apex, with finely crinkled margins. Flowers in short pseudo-spikes, with spathulate, bristle-tipped bracteoles. Perianth segments of the female flowers 3, linear-elliptic. Fruit up to 1,5
mm, dehiscent. Leaves edible. Fl. June-July. Waste places, street edges, cultivated land, sand dunes, s.l.

Southern parts of N. &C. America; recently widespread all over the world.
